Thunder
Len McCawley
Every time my shirt rubs my sore nipple I think of you.
Every time my pants touch the bruise on my leg I think of you.
You held me so tight that day and night that became day again.
Even though you are not upon me now,
you have left to see your sick sister, It is comforting to know that
a storm is coming.
I can hear the distant thunder rolling towards me, and while I can
not feel your bite and breath whispering my name or your fingers
gripping me so close, removing all separation, I know you are still near
enough to hear the thunder too.
The rumble first touches you ear, then my ear.
I am with you in the thunder claps.
I am with you in each roar.
I give the thunder messages to carry to you, may your sister pass well...
Until
You must head to your home, widening the space between us.
A place where my thunder can not touch you.
It rained again last night, first came the wind, then
flashes of light filled the sky as I lay in my bed alone.
Listening to the thunder, its rumbles where so empty,
unheard calls dissipated into nothingness
while the rain drowned the yard.
The corner of my eye did see,
A handsome glimmer that beckoned me.
Like a puff of smoke dancing in midair,
I tried to hold it, but it wasn't there,
Then the glimmer left as the sun dropped from the sky,
And as he left my heart did cry.
So i grabbed my shovel and pushed it deep.
The earth buckle below my feet.
And the sky let loose tears of rain,
They fell hard with my tears of pain.
I dropped my shovel. my heart filled with dread,
And then i laid my glimmer down in his bed.
Thinking about life and our future dreams,
I grabbed my mouth to hold in my screams.
If I had only lit candles to ward off the night, we could have
Raised children of shimmering light
Listen to me now because i tell you I know.
The darkness takes all that sparkles and glows.
Be it mineral, plant, or beloved pet...
Oh my darling, my glimmer, i'll never forget.
